About TopOnlineBanks.com
Last reviewed on April 27, 2026.
TopOnlineBanks.com is an independent comparison and review site focused on online banking in the United States. The goal is simple: help everyday savers and account-holders pick a checking, savings, or money market account that actually fits how they bank — without wading through marketing copy.
Who the site is for
The content here is written for general consumers, not professional treasurers or institutional investors. If you're choosing a primary checking account, opening a high-yield savings account, switching banks after a fee hike, or trying to understand how APY compares to a stated interest rate, you're the reader we have in mind.
What we cover
- Online savings and checking accounts — APY, fees, minimums, mobile experience.
- Bank reviews — concise profiles of digital-first banks and online divisions of larger banks, with pros, cons, and the kind of customer each account suits.
- Comparisons — head-to-head pages that surface the practical differences between two well-known accounts.
- Tools — a savings calculator, a fee tracker, and a short bank-finder quiz.
- Education — short guides on the mechanics of FDIC insurance, APY, switching banks, and digital vs. branch-based banking.
Editorial methodology
Rankings and ratings on the site are based on a four-factor framework. Each factor is given a fixed weight so two banks can be compared on the same scale.
1. Data (40%)
- Annual Percentage Yield (APY) on savings, checking, and money market accounts
- Fee schedule — monthly maintenance, ATM, overdraft, wire
- Minimum opening deposit and minimum balance to avoid fees
- Account features — early direct deposit, sub-accounts, joint-account support
- FDIC-membership status
2. User experience (30%)
- Mobile app and website usability for everyday tasks
- Account opening process
- Ease of moving money in and out (ACH, Zelle, wires, mobile deposit)
- Public sentiment from user reviews on multiple platforms (used in aggregate, not as a single number)
3. Customer service (20%)
- Channels offered (phone, chat, secure message, email)
- Stated hours and weekend availability
- Whether English-language support is offered around the clock
- Handling of disputes, replacement cards, and account recovery
4. Security and trust (10%)
- FDIC-insurance status and partner-bank arrangements where relevant
- Two-factor authentication and account-monitoring features
- Length of time the bank or its parent has been operating
- Public regulatory record
How content is produced
Reviews and comparison pages are written from primary sources: each bank's published rate sheet, fee schedule, and deposit agreement, supplemented by hands-on examination of public-facing flows such as account opening and dashboard navigation. Numbers shown on the site are verified against the bank's own pages on or near the page's “Last reviewed” date. We update those dates as content is checked, not on a schedule, so a recent date means the figures were verified recently.
Affiliate disclosure
How the site is funded. Some links to bank account pages are affiliate links. If you open an account through one of those links, the bank may pay a referral fee to TopOnlineBanks.com. The fee never increases the rate or terms you receive.
How that affects rankings. It does not. The four-factor framework above is applied to every bank we cover, whether or not we have an affiliate relationship with that bank. We have non-affiliate banks ranking above affiliate ones throughout the site. We do not accept payment in exchange for placement, and we do not edit a review to favor a partner.
Disclosure on every page that earns. Pages that contain affiliate links also display a short notice making the relationship clear, in line with general industry practice.
Editorial corrections
If you spot an out-of-date rate, a fee that has changed, or a factual error, please email [email protected] with the page URL and what you believe is incorrect. Corrections are prioritized and the “Last reviewed” date on the page is updated when a correction is made.
What we are not
